How to Bake a Perfect Pizza in a Regular Oven

Updated: 6 minutes ago

Getting a delicious, homemade pizza from your kitchen oven can feel like a challenge. Many people think you need a fancy outdoor pizza oven like an Ooni or Gozney, but with our pizza kits, you can create a perfect pizza right in your own oven. This guide will walk you through simple, clear steps to help you bake an amazing pizza that rivals your favorite pizza spot :) Happy baking!

Setting Up Your Oven for the Best Results

Your regular oven can produce excellent pizza if you prepare it correctly.

  • Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C): This high temperature helps create a crispy crust and melts the cheese perfectly.

  • Use a pizza stone or baking steel if you have one: Place it in the oven while preheating. These tools absorb and radiate heat evenly, mimicking a pizza oven.

  • If you don’t have a stone or steel, use a baking sheet: Turn it upside down and preheat it in the oven. This creates a flat, hot surface for the pizza.

Make sure your oven is fully preheated before baking. This usually takes about 30 minutes.

Preparing Your Pizza Dough

The foundation of any great pizza is the dough. Our pizza kits come with a fresh 14-inch dough ball that is ready to use. Here’s how to prepare it:

  • Bring the dough to room temperature: Take the dough out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you plan to bake. This makes it easier to stretch and prevents tearing. Make sure not to leave them out for over 2-3 hours or they will over proof and rip.

  • Lightly flour your surface: Sprinkle flour or semolina flour on a clean countertop or cutting board to stop the dough from sticking.

  • Stretch the dough gently: Use your hands to press the dough from the center outward, rotating it as you go. Avoid using a rolling pin, which can push out the air bubbles that give the crust its texture.

  • Shape it into a 14-inch circle: Aim for an even thickness, about 1/4 inch thick, with a slightly thicker edge for the crust.

If the dough resists stretching, let it rest for 5-10 minutes and try again. This relaxes the gluten and makes shaping easier.

Adding Sauce and Cheese

Once your dough is shaped, it’s time to add the toppings included in your kit.

  • Spread our homemade sauce evenly: Use the back of a spoon to spread the sauce, leaving about an inch of space around the edges for the crust.

  • Add freshly shredded mozzarella cheese: Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the sauce. Don’t overload it; a balanced amount helps the pizza cook evenly and prevents sogginess.

Feel free to add your own toppings like sliced vegetables, pepperoni, or fresh basil, but keep in mind that too many toppings can affect cooking time and texture.

Baking Your Pizza

Now that your pizza is ready and your oven is hot, it’s time to bake.

  • Transfer the pizza to the hot surface: Use a pizza peel or the back of a baking sheet dusted with flour or cornmeal to slide the pizza onto the stone or baking sheet.

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes: Watch for the crust to turn golden brown and the cheese to bubble and slightly brown.

  • Rotate halfway through baking: This ensures even cooking, especially if your oven has hot spots.

Avoid opening the oven door too often, as this lowers the temperature and can affect cooking.

Checking for Doneness and Serving

Knowing when your pizza is done is key to enjoying it at its best.

  • Look for a golden crust: The edges should be firm and browned.

  • Check the cheese: It should be melted and bubbly with some golden spots.

  • Bottom of the crust: If possible, lift the pizza slightly to check that the bottom is crisp and not doughy.

Once baked, let the pizza rest for a couple of minutes before slicing. This helps the cheese set and makes cutting easier.

Tips for Customizing Your Pizza Experience

Our pizza kits provide the essentials, but you can personalize your pizza with these ideas:

  • Add fresh herbs after baking: Basil, oregano, or arugula add fresh flavor.

  • Drizzle olive oil or hot honey: Adds richness and a touch of acidity.

  • Try different cheeses: Mix mozzarella with parmesan or blue cheese for variety.

Keep toppings balanced to avoid soggy crusts or uneven cooking.

Cleaning Up After Baking

Cleaning your oven and tools helps maintain your kitchen and ensures great pizza every time.

  • Let the oven cool before cleaning: Wipe any spills or cheese drips to prevent burning next time.

  • Clean your pizza stone or steel properly: Avoid soap; use a scraper and warm water if needed.

  • Wash baking sheets and utensils: Soak if cheese or sauce sticks.

Regular maintenance keeps your equipment ready for your next pizza night.

Enjoy and happy baking!!
